The railroad industry plays a vital role in the manufacturing supply chain. Railroads haul chemicals, oil & gas, petrochemicals, farm equipment, agricultural goods, steel, metals, and minerals. Certain materials, like chemicals, can only be transferred by railroads. These highly volatile, combustible substances are too dangerous to carry by way of a truck. Railroads also haul containers that can be transported on ocean liners or trucks. These containers—intermodal—carry various goods, including food, consumer-related products, and electronics.
